How to Remove Microlink Hair Extensions in Five Easy Steps

Only five steps? Yep – pretty nifty, I’d say. But before we hurry off to remove your microlinks, please consider purchasing a good pair of hair extension pliers. Using any ole pair of pliers can be damaging – and that’s what we’re trying to avoid!

Here’s how to safely and effectively remove microlinks from your home:

Step 1: Section Off Your Hair

The first step is to section off your natural hair so you can have better access to your microlink hair extensions.

While you can go piece by piece, it will be a heck of a lot easier to portion off an entire row of microlink hair extensions.

Clip your natural hair up and out of the way, so you don’t accidentally pull on them during the removal process.

Step 2: Squeeze the Microlink With Your Hair Extension Pliers

Microlink hair extensions are applied by squeezing a bead around the hair shaft until it’s a flat square shape. So, when it comes to removing microlink hair extensions, you essentially want to reverse that by squeezing in the opposite direction, turning the square back into a circle.

Remember that you need to be very gentle when doing this. The last thing you want to do is accidentally damage your roots or scalp. Only apply pressure when the hair extensions are stubborn – and even then, don’t overdo it!

Don’t worry, visual gals – here’s a video to help you every step of the way:

Step 3: Slide Down the Hair Shaft

Now it’s time for the fun part – removing the hair extensions!

Since the microlinks have been “loosened up,” it should be easy-peasy to slide them down off of your natural hair strand.

Again, this is a process that should be performed with the utmost care. Don’t tug or pull too hard, as that can cause discomfort and damage – or perhaps, even hair loss! Instead, be gentle. If your hair extensions won’t budge, try prying them open a bit more with your hair pliers.

Step 4: Remove Any Residue

There may be some leftover residue where the beads sat – and that’s entirely normal, so don’t panic.

You can remove it by using the tail or a rat comb. Gently pry the residue off of your hair strands. If it’s too difficult to remove, you can always opt for some bond remover to lend a helping hand.

Never try to brush through the leftover residue. This residue is essentially stuck to your hair strands. If you try to power your way through it with a brush or comb, you will likely end up with some damage to your locks.

Step 5: Wash and Use a Deep Conditioner

Regardless of how wonderfully you took care of your microlink hair extensions and how tender you were during removal, your hair is still going to be somewhat compromised after having hair extensions.

That said, aftercare is critical

Once all of the microlink hair extensions have been removed, you will need to shampoo and condition your hair as usual. However, go a step further and use a deep conditioning mask to restore the health, luster, and moisture of your mane.

While you can have microlink hair extensions installed immediately, I always recommend giving your hair a break for a week or two. During this time, you can use your deep conditioning mask three times a week to ensure it’s strong enough for another round of microlinks!
